OCEANPOINT INSURANCE CONTRIBUTES TO HUNGER RELIEF PROGRAMMIDDLETOWN, RI – April 2nd, 2018 – OceanPoint Insurance Agency today announced it has donated $500 to East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP) as part of the Arbella Insurance Foundation’s Let’s Drive Out Hunger program. Along with OceanPoint Insurance, the Arbella Insurance Foundation donated $1,000 to bring the total donation to $1,500

Now in its 10th year, Let’s Drive Out Hunger aims to alleviate the prevalent issue of food insecurity in New England.  The Arbella Insurance Foundation collects contributions from any of Arbella Insurance’s nearly 500 partner independent agents and matches each donation on a two-to-one basis – up to $1,000 per agency. Over the past nine years, the Arbella Insurance Foundation and independent agents have contributed more than $940,000 to more than 400 emergency food programs, soup kitchens, food pantries and homeless shelters throughout New England. This year, the program aims to exceed its $1 million goal of giving.

“According to 2016 data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 41.2 million people across the country live in food-insecure households—that number is staggering,” said OceanPoint Insurance President and CEO, Douglas Mayhew.  “Hunger is a persistent issue in so many communities, thus OceanPoint Insurance is very proud of our donation to EBCAP’s “Fill the Pantries” campaign to help individuals and families overcome food insecurity.”  EBCAP food pantries are located at 1048 Stafford Road in Tiverton, 100 Bullocks Point Avenue in East Providence and 19 Broadway in Newport.  Mayhew continued, “We encourage other local businesses to support the tireless efforts of local food pantries to ensure food is available for all neighbors in need.”

The severity of hunger continues to affect thousands of families across New England. According to the USDA, 13 percent of households in Connecticut and more than 10 percent in New Hampshire suffer from hunger and food insecurity. Fifty-six thousand families in Rhode Island lack adequate food. In Massachusetts, research shows that almost 10 percent of households struggle to find and provide healthy meals.

On January 26th, 2018, at the Downtown Hartford Marriott, AFLAC (Connecticut and Rhode Island) presented OceanPoint Insurance with the prestigious Top Producing Broker Award for the agency’s 2017 sales performance.

Employees of  OceanPoint Insurance Agency and BankNewport (OPIA) recently created 60 youth literacy kits and 60 no sew fleece blankets in partnership with the United Way of Rhode Island.  The service projects were part of the Bank and OPIA’s annual workplace giving campaign in support of the United Way.

The youth literacy kits included a Clifford book by Norman Bridwell and an assortment of “add on projects” for each child, including a Clifford sock puppet, a bookmark, crayons and coloring worksheets, and a backpack tag.  The kit was designed to deepen children’s reading experience by bringing books to life.  The “‘no sew” blankets were made by cutting and knotting the fringe of colorful fleece fabrics, to provide a child with sense of security and a cozy reminder that someone cares.

Three local agencies were the beneficiaries of the literacy kits and blankets:  Comprehensive Community Action Program’s Head Start Program in Cranston, Westbay Community Action Program’s Children’s Center in Warwick, and the Women’s Resource Center of Newport and Bristol Counties. BankNewport and OPIA employees delivered 20 blankets and 20 literacy kits to each organization for their youth clients and families to enjoy.



The community is invited to join BankNewport and OceanPoint Insurance this summer to support local shelters by donating personal care items during the “Kind Heart, Fresh Start” collection drive.

Starting Monday, August 1 through Monday, August 15, all BankNewport and OceanPoint locations will be accepting community donations of toiletry items, including bars of soap, travel size shampoo, tooth brushes, toothpaste and deodorant.

Toiletries gathered during the two-week collection period will benefit the following five local shelters: Good Neighbors (Turner Avenue, Riverside), Harrington Hall (Howard Avenue, Cranston), Lucy’s Hearth (West Main Road, Middletown), McKinney Cooperative Shelter (Meeting Street, Newport), and Welcome House of South County (North Road, Peace Dale).



BankNewport  President and CEO, Sandra J. Pattie announced plans to open a new branch office in the first floor space of Building 4000 at Chapel View in Cranston in September 2016.

BankNewport has signed a 15-year lease for the new 2,700-square-foot branch at Chapel View. Located at the main entrance off of Sockanosset Cross Road and adjacent to Panera Bread, the branch will offer easy access for customers.

Stephanie Federici, financial services account manager, Doug Guilbert, account executive, and Christina Mohr, commercial lines account manager, were awarded the Certified Professional Insurance Agent (CPIA) designation at the Independent Agents of RI Annual Education Awards Luncheon.

The CPIA designation recognizes leaders in the insurance industry for professionalism, commitment to sales training, and technical results.

To earn the designation, Stephanie, Doug, and Christina attended three Insurance Success Seminars designed to enhance the ability of producers, sales support staff, and company personnel to efficiently create and distribute effective insurance programs.

The seminars and completed coursework included implementing risk identification strategies and systems, developing specific methods for maintaining high legal and ethical standards, and assimilating customer needs to create a customized protection program.
