PROVIDENCE (March 20, 2019) — A workshop series hosted by OceanPoint Insurance will bring together thought leaders from various industries to discuss issues affecting non-profits. The first workshop in the 2019 Nonprofit Workshop Series, titled “Sensible Stewardship: Managing Governance Risk,” will be held on April 16, 2019, and it will focus on anticipating and avoiding board governance dangers.
David Madara, Nonprofit Practice Leader and Client Relationship Manager at OceanPoint Insurance, will lead the two-part workshop that will feature remarks by Melanie Lockwood Herman, who is the Executive Director at the Nonprofit Risk Management Center, and a panel discussion aimed at promoting effective governance policies.
“Non-profits provide society with a wealth of services that strengthen our communities, but they face a variety of challenges that prevent them from fulfilling their mission,” said Madara. “Our workshop series can help non-profit leaders anticipate issues and plan how to respond to those matters when the time comes.”
Panel members for the April 16 workshop include guest speaker Lockwood Herman; Linnea Michel, Founder and President of the Legal Center for Nonprofits, Inc.; David Preston, Founder and Owner of New Harbor Group; and Ron Bouchard, Vice President of Cash Management at BankNewport.
“Rhode Island has one of the highest number of non-profits per capita in the country, and OceanPoint Insurance is proud to help empower local and regional non-profits with knowledge that can help strengthen their causes,” said Doug Mayhew, President/CEO of OceanPoint Insurance.
The April 16 workshop will provide an overview of governance board best practices, and then pivot to risks that boards might have to face such as crisis management, recruitment red flags, and legal compliance for boards.
Pre-registration is encouraged for the upcoming workshop on Sensible Stewardship. The same event will be held at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, 20 North Main St., Providence, R.I., at 9 a.m., and at the BankNewport Corporate Training Center, 184 John Clarke Road, Newport, R.I., at 2 p.m.
Other workshop topics to be held throughout 2019 will focus on active threat/shooter preparedness, unemployment trends and funding, and developing a culture of safety. A full schedule is available here.
